                     Has Hrithik Become A Soft Target For His Super Success Story?

                     What makes stars such easy targets for slander and attack? Hrithik
                     Roshan's brush with international politics brings to question our whole
                     ethos of popular culture in this country. While on one hand we profess
                     almost godly reverence and affection for our films stars, on the other
                     hand, we   miss no opportunity to put them, in what we think to be, in
                     their place.

                     Just a few days after the happiest day of Hrithik's life came one of the
                     most miserable days of his life. On the morning of Decem-ber 26, the
                     newspapers headlined Hrithik's alleged statements against Nepal in a
                     television interview. When father Rakesh Roshan saw the reports, he
                     immediately sensed trouble. Not be-cause he thought his son could ever
                     say those nasty things; he knows Hrithik too well to suspect him of
                     using his tongue so carelessly and uselessly, but be
                                   cause the Roshans have lived within the film
                     industry for many years. They know trouble when they see it.

                     Rakesh Roshan immediately woke up his newly married son. 'Duggu,
                     you didn't say anything of this sort in any of your interviews, did you?'the
                     worried father asked. Hrithik looked completely perplexed. 'Of course
                     not, Papa. What's all this about?' That was all the assurance   the
                     confident father need-ed.

                     Recalls Hrithik, 'I was taking a shower that morning when the news
                     started coming in. My mom called out to me. I came out of the shower in
                     a towel to watch myself on television as the guy who triggered off riots in
                     Nepal! At first I was amused. I couldn't get over the absurdity of it. But
                     gradually the seri-ousness of the matter sank in. I realized people were
                     getting killed for something I had never said.   Looking back , it does-n't
                     make any sense. How would a journalist ask a question like, which
                     country and people do you hate the most, and why would I answer such
                     an absurd question?'

                     Rakesh Roshan called his publicist over to prepare a press state-ment
                     where Hrithik expressed his grief and regret at
                     having been blamed for something which he had no hand in. Thinking that
                     was the end of the ugly controversy, Rakesh Roshan left for Tirupati with
                     his wife. By the time he reached his destination, the tele-vision channels
                     were full of stories about    violence, riots and arson all over Nepal.

                     To his credit, Hrithik didn't panic. Instead, he offered to show tapes of all
                     the interviews he had ever done on television to anyone who accused him
                     of saying nasty things about Nepal. Sig-nificantly, no one came forward
                     to take up his offer.
